24th January – Garstang Golf and Country Hotel was once again the venue for our social evening and we were delighted to welcome Yvonne Pinder of Pinnys Pots to speak to us. Illness had somewhat depleted our numbers, but those of us who ventured out were treated to an excellent evening.

Yvonne had put out a beautiful array of her pots for us to admire and we were very impressed. She initially explained how she had come to start Pinnys Pots and how the name had been suggested by her husband as she always wore her pinny.

We were fascinated by the number of processes involved in creating the beautiful pots and the care taken. Once the talk was over the questions began, how, why, can we? Most of us went home with a memento of the evening, who could resist? One member even plans to have Yvonne do a class for her friends as a belated Christmas present. 10th January – Each year we offer a trophy and small monetary prize for Scientific Endeavour by girls at Garstang Academy. In 2017, we were pleased that this award was given to Liliana Andrews, who came along with her mother Christine, to talk to us at our January business meeting.

Liliana was pleased but amazed that she had actually won, as she had struggled with her science subjects at GCSE. She was lucky to have tutors that supported and encouraged her with her work and as a result, she achieved good GCSE results. Her efforts were also rewarded with a nomination for our Scientific Endeavour award, which she won.

Liliana has progressed onto her A’ levels and is now studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths and is then hoping to go on to university to study perhaps Bio-chemistry or Genetics. But before that, she wants to visit Korea to see how they embrace and develop science, as Korea is considered an advanced scientific country.

Liliana was a delightful visitor to our meeting and we wish her all the very best for her future and we hope she keeps us informed of her progression.
