Garstang Soroptimists enlisted the help of the children at Forton Primary School to help them kick start their “backpack” project.
The “Backpack Project” is a simple way of helping children from poor families in countries like Malawi and Liberia get to school. The Soroptimists will provide all the items to fill the bags and they will send them to the children who really need them.
Families were asked “Did your child get a new backpack for Christmas? Would they consider donating the old bag?”
Not only did the children bring in unwanted backpacks to school, but the local newspaper picked up the appeal from the school newsletter and published it in the Garstang Courier, and, as a result, several more backpacks were delivered to one of our members!
So now we have an excellent start to our project and can begin to fill up the backpacks with the items needed to enable a child to go to school.
