A Big Thank You!
To Garstang friends and families - our Christmas Hamper raised £151.00 towards the cost of the Christmas Lights – we hope the winner enjoyed the contents and had a happy festive season!
They also came and bought our Parched Peas, we raised a total of £200.00 on the Victorian Evenings.
Why Wear Orange?
Customers to our stall on Tuesday Eve would see members dressed in orange, why? Because orange is the colour designated by the UN Secretary General’s ‘UNiTE to End Violence Against Women’ campaign, meant to symbolize a bright future for all women – one free of violence. Tuesday 9th of December marked the last of the 16 day awareness campaign, during this time Soroptimist’s have been joined by thousands of organizations around the world who have focused on different aspects of violence against women.
A welcome treat – members enjoyed an excellent Christmas meal at the Crofters (no parched peas here thank you!) Secret Santa also attended!
Backpacks – a gentle reminder!
We are continuing with our backpack project this year so if Santa brought new ones please donate your old ones to be filled and sent to children who are denied education, and the daily meal that is provided at school, because of lack of basic writing and personal equipment.

The regular readers of this column will be familiar with our, two year, BIG Project, Birthing in the Gambia, our target was £100,000.00, this money to provide equipment and staff training to reduce the high death rate of pregnant mothers and babies. The final total, announced at Conference, was £144,595.51p We saw before and after pictures of an operating theatre,- transformed from a basic ‘non-too-clean’ room with a table and chair, to a hygienic fully equipped facility, including a scanner, in addition to a ten bed maternity ward. A detailed text book has been published which is to be sent to poor areas free of charge.
