Soroptimist International
International meets Local – the Sky’s the Limit Soroptimist International President Ann Garvie will overcome her fear of heights and take to the skies to raise funds for “See Solar, Cook Solar”, her December 10 Appeal (Human Rights Day and International President’s Appeal Day) to provide solar lamps and cookers to women and girls around the world, while providing education about renewable energy.
She has just signed up to a very personal challenge - Skydive!! When asked why? She answered because I could not say NO to the challenge of very persuasive Soroptimist, Margaret Baker of SI South Lancashire”.
Local man Guest Speaker at Regional Meeting
Mr. Eric Ollerenshaw OBE MP, will be talking to us about trafficking. As he serves on the cross party committee on trafficking, we look forward to an interesting and informative discussion time.
North West Soroptimist members will be keen to hear his views and expectations of the Draft Modern Day Slavery Bill.
An important day for all women
8th March. The United Nations International Women’s Day
Soroptimists will be presenting a petition entitled ‘Violence Against Women – Stop it Now’ to David Cameron on Thursday 6th March. The petition highlights five areas of concern,- Modern Day Slavery, Forced Marriage and Honor Killings, Domestic and Elder Abuse.
These acts of abuse are now illegal in the UK but prosecutions against perpetrators are negligible.
We hope this petition will keep the issue of ‘Violence Against Women’ high on the Government’s agenda.
An important year for Brownies – not the ones you eat!
The Brownies are 100 years old
Garstang soroptimists would like to congratulate the Brownies on their hundredth birthday, we wish them good luck with all their celebratory events in 2014.
A little bit of fun does you good!
Last month our social meeting excised our laughter muscles as well as quite a few others, as Maureen Chippendale, one of our members, led us thorough some entertaining routines! This month we are keeping the fitness theme as we head for a Friendly Ten Pin Bowling match (followed by a Pub snack!)
Why not come and meet us?
